Matt Wertz is one of Nashville's best examples that Music City is more than just great country music....it's great music, period. Matt is the Nashville trifecta: incredible singer, engaging storyteller and an acoustic guitar aficionado.
This new record, Gun Shy, however, is pure California. Matt breaks away from his acoustic roots to create an album that is danceable pop, calling on influences of the 1980s yet with a modern twist, following in the footsteps of Taylor Swift's pure pop bliss album 1989 but never imitating.
Last night, he brought the Gun Shy tour to a packed house at Hotel Cafe nearly 2,000 miles away from home. His return was a welcome one, and he barely paused to speak as he attempted to squeeze much of the new album into a set peppered with some of his most beloved hits, like "5:19" and "Carolina."
The new sounds of Gun Shy suit him, particularly live, and it almost seems as if he's finally arrived, even though Matt's been an important force in music for a long time. Watching him light up as he belted out new classics "Smoke," "Easy Things Hard," and the title track "Gun Shy (Change)" created an air of electricity in Hollywood's favorite venue.
The highlight of the evening was when Matt unplugged for a song, as the room fell silent to hear his bluesy vocals captivate the room. It was a chill-inducing moment. There wasn't a better place to catch live music in all of Los Angeles last night.
Aaron is the guy you had a crush on in high school but were too afraid to talk to, with the coolness of an electro-pop musician and the mystery of a moody artist. His vibe is cutting edge, much in the vein of The Weeknd or The Chainsmokers, pushing boundaries and unafraid of where he's going, even if you've never been there before.
Cappa is having a great year- she just released a phenomenal EP, Queen of Hearts, that was exclusively premiered by Billboard. Every song on it sounds like a chart topper, particularly "Next Ex" and "I'm Good." She's got that big pop sound, and if you love artists like Halsey, Ellie Goulding or Sia, this is an artist you need to check out.
Don't miss Matt Wertz and company on the Gun Shy tour this fall.
